Napa Valley spans just 30 miles from Calistoga in the north to Carneros in the south, yet contains 16 distinct AVAs (American Viticultural Areas) shaped by dramatic variations in altitude, soil, and microclimate. Cabernet Sauvignon is king, producing rich, full-bodied wines with dark fruit, structured tannins, and the ability to age for decades. Significant plantings of Merlot, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, and Zinfandel round out the region.

Sought-after sub-appellations include Oakville and Rutherford for benchland Cabernet with signature "Rutherford dust," Stags Leap District for elegant, structured reds, Howell Mountain and Spring Mountain for concentrated mountain-grown wines, and Carneros for cool-climate Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. The volcanic and alluvial soils across the valley floor and hillsides create remarkable site-specific expression.

Cult producers like Screaming Eagle, Harlan Estate, Scarecrow, and Opus One sit alongside established icons such as Robert Mondavi, Stag's Leap Wine Cellars, and Caymus. Napa Cabernet pairs superbly with grilled ribeye, braised short ribs, aged cheddar, and dark chocolate desserts.
